It is said that if you want to bind your documents with a wire binder you either have to be very skilled and very patient, or send them out to be done by a binding service. Let’s look at why this is so and what are the advantages and disadvantages of wire binding:

  1. Wire binding involves several steps. First you must punch the holes in the paper, usually only a few pages at a time. Second insert the wire coil into the machine and position the open coil. Third, thread the paper holes through the wire and finally close the wire so the paper will not fall out. Because it is so time consuming, most organizations choose to outsource this binding service.
  2. The advantage of wire binding is that it looks attractive when done properly. The wire coil on the spine is not too large and the paper is bound securely into the coil. The pages open flat for easy reading.
  3. The disadvantage of wire binding is that the pages cannot be edited. This means that if you want to add or delete pages, then you must reprint the whole document and start again. You can use pliers to bend the wire back so as you can take the pages out, but you would have damaged the wire and so will have to re bind the document.
  4. Cost – wire binding is maybe the most expensive of the binding alternatives in both supplies and labour. So if you have a lot of binding to do, you may want to look at other binding alternatives.

Wire binding does have its advantages, especially if you can outsource it. Also you must be sure that you do not want to edit the document at a later stage, as this is hard to do.

A more modern alternative and one that is a lot easier, costs less and looks good is the IQ Binding method. Have a look at the website www.thermalbinding.com.au and get a free 2 week trial.
